- Lactuca virosa : Anodyne, Antispasmodic, Sedative . The sap of Wild Lettuce contains Lactucarium which has the effects of a mild opium , so is very sedative and calming. The effects of ingesting L. virosa in any form , are similar to opium, although no opiates are present in the plant. Effects are felt quickly but do not last long, between half an hour to a couple of hours. They dwindle slowly. The plant has been used as an anesthetic and a sleep aid, as well as recreationally.
White Willow Bark - Salix alba : Anodyne, Anti - Inflammatory, Diaphoretic, Febrifuge, Sedative. It contains salicin, which decomposes into salicylic acid (closely related to aspirin) in the human body. The active extract of the bark, called salicin, after the Latin name Salix, was isolated to its crystalline form in 1828 by Henri Leroux, a French pharmacist, and Raffaele Piria, an Italian chemist, who then succeeded in separating out the acid in its pure state. Salicylic acid, like aspirin, is a chemical derivative of salicin.
Pharamceutical Aspirin is a more concentrated source of the active chemicals in the herb, so don’t expect the herb to be as effective. However, aspirin upsets some people’s stomach, while white willow bark rarely causes this problem. White willow appears to be slower than aspirin to bring pain relief, but its effects may last longer.
NB. Do not use if taking opiate based medications, Warfarin or any blood thinning medications.
